Pi Kappa Omega Chapter History & Scholarship Legacy
Pi Kappa Omega Chapter
In 1984, members Ava Callender and Cyril S. Hunt began discussing the idea of establishing a new Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chapter in New York City. Their vision was to reconnect members who had graduated without joining a graduate chapter and to re-engage those who had become inactive.
The first meeting was held on December 2, 1985, where eighteen members unanimously voted to form an interest group called the New York Pearls. By the second meeting, the group had grown to forty-two members.
On March 3, 1986, the New York Pearls met with Regional Director Ruth C. Easley to present their service initiatives and charter application, highlighting community service partnerships, food and clothing donations, and educational contributions.
On March 10, 1986, the Directorate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. approved their charter, and on June 28, 1986, at Sweetwater’s Restaurant in Manhattan, Pi Kappa Omega Chapter was officially chartered.
Commitment to Education
Since its founding, Pi Kappa Omega has maintained a strong commitment to education through its scholarship programs, providing financial support to students pursuing higher education.
Scholarships Include:
- Jimmia Joy Blakely-Woodyard Memorial Medical Scholarship – Supports students pursuing degrees in medicine, nursing, or pharmacology.
- Undergraduate Merit Scholarships – Recognize students with high academic achievement.
- “I Have a Dream” Scholarship – Honors students who exemplify Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for a better America.
- HBCU Scholarship – Dedicated to students attending a Historically Black College or University.
In addition to the scholarships listed above, the chapter has annually supported the Pearls of Service Foundation's scholarships:
- Ruth Tudos Scholarship – Supports students pursuing a degree in Social Work.
- Dr. Virginia L. Flintall Four-Year Scholarship – Awarded to students pursuing degrees in education or behavioral sciences.
Each scholarship provides funds to offset essential college-related expenses not typically covered by traditional financial aid packages. Past recipients have used these funds for dormitory necessities, bedding and linens, backpacks and school supplies, and travel expenses. These scholarships are designed to ease the financial burden of college, allowing students to focus on academic success and personal growth.
By supporting Pi Kappa Omega and its programs, including our 40th Anniversary Celebration, donors directly contribute to the continuation of these scholarship programs, making a tangible difference in the lives of college students.
